British Values

Promoting Fundamental British Values at Eastburn Primary School

The DfE has stated the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.” The Government first set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values have been reiterated in subsequent guidance. At Eastburn, these values are reinforced regularly in the following ways:

Democracy

Children at Eastburn have a voice and many opportunities to contribute positively to school life. Our elected School Council meets regularly to discuss issues relating to the school and is led by Mrs Fowler. We also have House Captains and Vice-Captains who lead school events and act as role models for their peers.

The Rule of Law

The importance of following rules and acting within the law is reinforced through our school ethos and Behaviour and Ethos Policy. Pupils learn the reasons behind rules, how to take personal responsibility for their actions, and the consequences when rules or laws are broken. Visits from the local Police and Fire Service further support children’s understanding of making positive contributions to their community.

Individual Liberty

Children at Eastburn are encouraged to make their own choices in a safe and supportive environment. Our Behaviour and Ethos Policy provides clear boundaries while empowering pupils to take responsibility for their actions. Learners explore their rights and freedoms through curriculum activities and assemblies.

Mutual Respect

Children understand that their behaviours and actions affect the rights of others. Everyone in our school community treats peers, adults, and themselves with respect. Whole-school assemblies focus on the importance of showing respect to others and being tolerant of individual needs.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Eastburn is located in a culturally diverse area, and we actively promote diversity through the curriculum. Children visit places of worship, learn about different faiths, and work with the Bradford Interfaith Centre to develop understanding and appreciation of different beliefs.

At Eastburn, we actively challenge pupils, staff, or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British values, including extreme views, ensuring that our school remains a safe and inclusive environment for all.

Promoting British Values through reading
